… former presidents! This is what one might think about the following statement made by Mr. Sarkozy, former President of the French Republic:
“Of all the continents of the world, Europe is the most brutal continent, where there have been the most savage wars. It's not in Africa, it's not in Asia.
And I'll tell you something else: it's not in the Middle Ages, it's in the 20th century, it's in Europe that Jews were exterminated.
When people say that the conflict Russia Ukraine means a return of the war [in Europe], it is stupidity, they forget Bosnia. Our continent is brutal and savage and can descend into barbarism.”
That was a statement by Mr. Nicolas Sarkozy on March 16, before a parliamentary committee on France energy independence.
I think this statement speaks for itself. So I would just add two clarifications:
The recent inter-European wars of 1914-18 and 1939-45 cost the death of more than 84 million people, including nearly 60 million civilians!, not to mention infrastructure destruction. No conflict in all of human history has caused so much suffering.
The Russian-Ukrainian war is indeed a continuation of the inter-European wars of the past but with a novelty: it was the United States who were the instigators of this war, the European countries unfortunately playing the role of puppets.
