Afghanistan: defeat, shame and cynicism

Despite the incessant drumbeat of the Symphony of Human Rights and the Big Bad Wolf, the facts are there, inescapable. The date of August 15, 2021 will mark the crushing defeat of the American Empire at the hands of the heroic Afghan people, who had previously repelled the Soviet occupation and attempts by the British to do the same. The United States had clearly not learned its lessons from its 1975 defeat in Vietnam. Will it this time? Instead of sticking to the basics, which would be to pack their bags and leave as quickly as possible, the United States and other Western countries it enlisted in this dirty war have created and worsened a humanitarian crisis by encouraging Afghan nationals to leave. Without missing a beat, the same countries announce they are now prepared to admit thousands of Afghan refugees, after having long decreed that such refugees pose an untenable security risk.
