It's true, there is a conspiracy, but this one is a different kind: it's taking place in broad daylight.
As of today, October 17, nearly 40 million people have been infected by the coronavirus and more than a million have died from it! Those are huge numbers! In the United States alone, the number of deaths from COVID-19 exceeds the number of American soldiers killed on the battlefield during the 2nd Inter-Imperial War (1941-45).
But how is this being portrayed in the media? During the initial weeks and months, the coronavirus received massive coverage in television, print, internet and radio media, with full details on the numbers of cases and mortalities, the type of disease this is, possible treatments and vaccines. But over time, the headlines began to fade, to second and then third place. And while there is less and less talk about it, the pace of the pandemic seems to be accelerating! What does this tell us?
A reading of the figures and media coverage is revealing: the first thing of note is that the pandemic has largely affected the industrialized countries of Europe and America. The figures speak for themselves: as of today, Europe and the United States alone account for 15 million cases and 462,000 deaths, representing 38% and 43% of worldwide infections and deaths, respectively.
The diminished media coverage reveals an embarrassment that is difficult to explain away. The dilemma becomes more obvious when we look at coverage by the same media of epidemics and other disasters when they occur in poor countries: without a hint of shame, the Western media are keen to describe in minute detail the material and human catastrophes in these regions, and publish absolutely revolting images with no qualms whatsoever and a blatant disregard for journalistic ethics.
Now that the pandemic is slamming the industrialized nations with their enormous technological and financial means, the situation is very awkward indeed. It is shocking if we consider the underlying reasons: these countries have given priority to global material wealth, even at the expense of the health of their own citizens. Moreover, this is a conscious choice and highly unjust, since it aims at the unfettered enrichment of the minority elites that rule these countries. That is the real conspiracy!
Of course, given the enormous means deployed, the search for a treatment and a vaccine will eventually solve the problem, but it will come at a high price: hundreds of thousands of avoidable deaths!
We still have a long way to go to build systems where humans are at the centre of all economic and social activity, but we know - or should know - the direction we should be heading.
